Luke Read has completed the Marathon Des Sables 2022 for Cancer Campaign in Suffolk!

UPDATE A big thank you from the whole team to Luke for taking part in the Marathon and raising the amazing total of £4,020 which will be split between Cancer Campaign in Suffolk and Suffolk Community Foundation.

Luke flew back in to the UK on Monday 4th April, blisters and all, after taking part in the amazing endurance challenge in the Sahara Desert. Cancer Campaign in Suffolk are very grateful for what Luke put himself through .. the money he has raised will be supporting CCiS and Suffolk Community Foundation.

Luke Read has picked a fierce challenge to test his endurance, fitness and mental capacity by taking on the 36th Marathon Des Sables, starting on 27th March in the Sahara Desert. Having to be totally self sufficient, carrying all of his food, sleeping equipment and anything else he needs for the 6 day extreme challenge, Luke will be covering 250km in temperatures reaching up to 40 during the day and down to 6 at night.

Luke’s chosen charities are Cancer Campaign in Suffolk, who provide support to Suffolk people who have received a cancer diagnosis, offering free counselling, well being sessions, support and guidance on coping with cancer from diagnosis through treatment and afterwards. He is also supporting Suffolk Community Foundation with a particular focus on male mental health. This is close to his heart having been in the forces and undertaking 2 tours in Afghanistan.
“I’m not nervous” was his first comment when asked about the challenge ahead. “This is a huge challenge, I’m prepared and excited, determined and intrigued as to what will face me”. “I’m not scared, this is going to be a great adventure and a culmination of a huge amount of hard work”.
The extreme challenge starts this Saturday with a “gentle” start of marathon on day’s 1, 2 and 3 followed by 60m challenge – “I’ll do that in a day” and a rest day to follow. To finish just a gentle marathon day. All of this is extreme enough but add in sand dunes, dry heat and soaring temperatures, the perils of dehydration and blisters being the biggest dangers to Luke, all whilst carrying his own equipment to get through the day and night when temperatures drop. “I’ll have a spare t-shirt and socks” plus a sleeping bag and coat for the nights. What an incredible challenge and huge support to the charities Luke has chosen.
